Well, leave it to someone to point out the obvious. I read the ata manpage, and set the hw.ata.ata_dma and hw.ata.atapi_dma variables to 1, and the message went away. I also got WDMA2 access to my CD-ROM again. I didn't even realize device drivers *had* manpages! This might prove useful in the future, when I try (yet again) to get MIDI to work...
