Bill, 

how much memory in this box?  i would try w/64MB or less.  there is a 
bug w/770 thinkpads (search for 770 in freebsd-mobile) and needing 
amount of memory sysgened for >64MB.  You sysgen and then reinstall 
the simm(s)
