I tried the xbrightness port, but no luck however I don't really
understand the error:

xbrightness 1.0                                                            
xbrightness:  unable to open default display.


Could this be related to the fact that I've built Xorg with:
WITH_NEW_XORG=true
WITH_KMS=true
