Well, let's start with 'can you see the LEDs?', and then 'lets plug it into this other machine over here for a second' (especially when the 'other machine' isn't a PC). On top of that, unless the card has a _real_ '550 on it, your chances of it working well are slim. Then you have the lightning risk to think about; an external modem has an isolated power supply and fusible links (also known as line drivers) between it and the computer; an internal modem has a hotline (so to speak) to all of the expensive components in your system. How's that for a start?
