Then I suggest that you contact the libxml/libxml2 author and voice
your concerns about the fact that these two pieces of software at
present cannot coexist on the same machine.

Making (substantial) local modifications to the libxml2 port, only
to then rip them out again once libxml dies sounds like needless
work, which should really be done by the author.

Just for reference, excluding those ports that are part of the GNOME
metaport, which we'll assume will be appropriately updated on a
switchover, I count only 11 ports that have direct dependencies
on textproc/libxml (and thus assume that they'd have to be modified
to use libxml2).
