You may want to mention this to phk (cc'd).  He's done some 
uncommitted work with a standardised synchronous device interface.

The bit I'm interested in is the ioctl() that'll let me know it's a 
sync device... then ppp/tty.c:tty_Create() can automatically talk to 
it properly :-)
