The correct way to update a FreeBSD system from source is, and has
always¹ been 'make world' or 'make buildworld && make installworld'
(the two forms are equivalent), followed by a manual (or automated,
e.g. with the mergemaster port) update of the /etc directory. 'make'
followed by 'make install' will *not* work.

¹ for as long as I've used FreeBSD, that is
