The purpose of /etc/defaults/rc.conf is to provide an explicit list of all
of the startup tunables, with their default values, so that you can
selectively override just the things you want to tweak.

Only, the way to do that is not to edit /etc/defaults/rc.conf, but to change
/etc/rc.conf. You should be able to replace the old /etc/defaults/rc.conf
whenever you run mergemaster, although taking a look at the diff and seeing
whether anything you've customized has changed might save you a bit of time.
