I'd suggest getting the latest ppp from 

  http://www.Awfulhak.org/ppp.html

and then check

  http://www.FreeBSD.org/FAQ/userppp.html

for details of how to get some useful logs.  You'll probably want 
something like

  set log command phase chat lcp ipcp
