Dumb question: You do build both world and kernel when you
update your sources? And if it fails the way you do it, you fall
back to the official method described in UPDATING before yelling
"it's broken"? There must be a reason when a thousand answers
are about how to update a system (and not just one part of it).

I miss the "install" target here, unless it's so obvious for you
that you don't mention it. Just like "buildworld" and
"installworld".
Maybe you should try one safe run of the suggested form. Cutting
corners is not very efficient when problems keep you from simply
running your new system. :)
