My hair is already grey and falling out

I need some help with installing gimp.

when i run the ./configure script i get this.

checking for gtk-config... /usr/X11R6/bin/gtk-config
checking for GTK - version >= 1.2.0... no
*** Could not run GTK test program, checking why...
*** The test program failed to compile or link. See the file config.log for the
*** exact error that occured. This usually means GTK was incorrectly installed
*** or that you have moved GTK since it was installed. In the latter case, you
*** may want to edit the gtk-config script: /usr/X11R6/bin/gtk-config
configure: error: Test for GTK failed. See the file 'INSTALL' for help.
ginger#

at first i had the wrong version so i pkg_deleted it
and installed the new version via ports.

A check of /var/db/pkg shows it is installed
but i dont know where or how to make gimp see
the installation.

ginger# ls gtk* | more
gtk-1.2.2:
+COMMENT
+CONTENTS
+DESC

some of the things i tried.

added /usr/local/lib to /etc/ld.so.conf and /etc/ld-elf.so.conf
then ran ldconfig -elf -R

still same message.

I never did anything like this and suspect
I am getting into a big worms nest doing it.

can anyone help
