I would like to get on the record that I have never fully convinced
myself that the gzip did the right thing to the vm system, in particular
I just called functions I could find usage of that did what I kindda
needed, not quite knowing if I needed to do more than I did.

What I wanted to say with that was, don't expect the version prior to
that patch to have been >correct< maybe the vm system just was more
tolerant before...
