It would have been nice with the real output here, details details...
Its not clear to me if the CDROM is on wdc0 or wdc1 ??
The probe can hang pretty long if no devices is present, the standard
calls for 30secs waits for devices to become ready.

You patch will break on all machines having the CDROM as slave :(

We need the exact probe messages, best with verbose on, and the
setup of the drives (channel 0/1 master/slave) to help you 
any further...
