It just hit me that when I had similar trouble with a matrox card, I
found some floppy-image with some (MS-DOS) tools on Matrox'
web-site. One of these tools was able to automatically scan the PCI
bus, detect and fix any badly configured matrox cards. I can't
remember what it was called, but it shouldn't be too hard to find.

The only problem was, the "fix" would vanish on every power-cycle. It
did however work to boot the MS-DOS floppy, run the tool, and reboot
into your favorite OS.
