I am an absolute believer in external modems. You can see what is
going on. Once in awhile they get confused and hang. It is very easy
to reset them with the switch. Try that on an internal and maintain
your uptime <grin>. The drivers for all externals is a known quantity
and you don't lose another IRQ. My computers are always running out of
IRQ's.

Second, I have played with rs-232 communications since 1980. When the
internet became popular, I quit using protocols such as Kermit,
Zmodem, and etc. At some point in time, I became convinced that modems
work better with members of the clan than with neighbors. What I mean
is I think a USR will talk to a USR better than to a Zoom. The
programming for the DSP's are identical and Zoom may not have it down
to the same set of fine points as USR. Zoom will have its own set of
fine points and so will Creative, and etc. What I mean here is that I
believe that it is very important to use the same brand of modem as
your ISP. I also happen to like USR and that is what my ISP uses.
