It's been a while since I looked at this stuff, but the last time I looked at 
it, xvmixer didn't query the driver as to what devices were controllable, it 
just had the SoundBlaster devices hardcoded into it.  "mixer", the tty 
interface, on the other hand, knows about all the devices.

I often do something like

mixer vol 90
mixer synth 50
mixer cd 30

to play a cd in the background, and to have any /dev/audio stuff louder than 
the CD for audio biff and such.

(I modified "mixer" to print out all the volumes when you run it with no 
arguments, as well, I think that's much friendlier...)
