This is BSD.  New files inherit the group OF THE DIRECTORY WHERE THEY
ARE CREATED [as long as the group of that directory is in the
authorized group list of the creating process].  To the contrary, on
SysV new files inherit the primary group of the creating process.

I would still believe that you don't need newgrp(1).
