tex is composed of many parts, and some of the tex packages I've seen 
(and tried) have really disappointed me.  Good news is our teTeX ports, 
in ports/print, is real complete, and very well integrated.  I suggest 
you install that one and try again (ports/print/teTeX, NOT ports/print/tex).
