Followup:
I found my ISP's connection help page. Is says to use CHAP or PAP.
Neither of them work so it's back to the config files I go.

Note:
The last log said my modem doesn't support CD.
Since my default is &C1&D2E1Q0\N4 I may have a hardware problem
that Windows has been ignoring. I'll try another modem. :(
