I haven't seen a reply for this, so I'll just add :

The _entire_ root filesystem must be below the 500M mark for the bootstrap
to be sure it can work.  (If the kernel was over the 500M mark the BIOS
wouldn't be able to read it, and there's no way of guaranteeing that it
always will be.)
