Contained below is more information that may be of help. Again, I simply went through the FreeBSD 3.2 install process, included the development packages, and these certain files, ie text editors, report "permission denied". Any thoughts? =========================== Script started on Tue Nov 23 10:41:00 1999 You have mail. myname# env USER=root MAIL=/var/mail/root HOME=/root PAGER=more LOGNAME=root TERM=xterm BLOCKSIZE=K PATH=/sbin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/games:/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin :/usr/X11R6/bin:/root/bin DISPLAY=:0.0 SHELL=/bin/csh PWD=/mnt/floppy MANPATH=/usr/share/man:/usr/X11R6/man:/usr/local/man EVERSION=0.15.5 EROOT=/usr/X11R6/share/enlightenment EPID=284 ETHEME=/usr/X11R6/share/enlightenment/themes/ShinyMetal WINDOWID=25165838 TERMCAP=xterm|vs100|xterm terminal emulator (X window system):li#24:kh=\EOH:@7=\EOF:kb=^H:kD=^?:k1=\EOP:k2=\EOQ:k3=\EOR:k4=\EOS:hs :km:ts=\E[?E\E[?%i%dT:fs=\E[?F:es:ds=\E[?E:is=\E>\E[?1;3;4;5l\E[?7;8h\E[1;65 r\E[65;1H:rs=\E>\E[?1;3;4;5l\E[?7;8h:kI=\E[2~:kN=\E[6~:kP=\E[5~:k6=\E[17~:k7 =\E[18~:k8=\E[19~:k9=\E[20~:k;=\E[21~:k5=\E[15~:ve=\E[?25h:vi=\E[?25l:k0@:im @:ei@:F1=\E[23~:F2=\E[24~:ic=\E[@:IC=\E[%d@:ec=\E[%dX:al=\E[L:dl=\E[M:mi:dc= \E[P:AL=\E[%dL:DL=\E[%dM:DC=\E[%dP:do=\E[B:cl=\E[H\E[J:sf=\ED:as=\E(0:ae=\E( B:cm=\E[%i%d;%dH:nd=\E[C:up=\E[A:nw=\EE:ce=\E[K:cd=\E[J:so=\E[7m:se=\E[m:us= \E[4m:ue=\E[m:md=\E[1m:mr=\E[7m:mb=\E[5m:me=\E[m:sr=\EM:sc=\E7:rc=\E8:cs=\E[ %i%d;%dr:UP=\E[%dA:DO=\E[%dB:RI=\E[%dC:LE=\E[%dD:ct=\E[3g:st=\EH:co#80:le=^H :bs:am:if=/usr/share/tabset/vt100:ho=\E[H:ac=llmmkkjjuuttvvwwqqxxnnpprr``aa: ks=\E[?1h\E=:ke=\E[?1l\E>:ku=\EOA:kd=\EOB:kr=\EOC:kl=\EOD:@8=\EOM:K1=\EOq:K2 =\EOr:K3=\EOs:K4=\EOp:K5=\EOn:pt:vt#3:xn:ta=^I:ms:bl=^G:cr=^M:eo:it#8:ut:RA= \E[?7l:SA=\E[?7h: myname# set argv () cwd /mnt/floppy filec history 100 home /root mail /var/mail/root path (/sbin /bin /usr/sbin /usr/bin /usr/games /usr/local/sbin /usr/local/bin /usr/X11R6/bin /root/bin) prompt myname# prompt2 ? savehist 100 shell /bin/csh status 0 term xterm user root myname# cd /b emacs /bin/emacs: Permission denied. myname# cd /bin myname# ls [ dd hostname ps sh cat df kill pwd sleep chio domainname ln rcp stty chmod echo ls red sync cp ed mkdir rm test csh emacs mv rmail date expr pax rmdir myname# date Tue Nov 23 10:42:24 EST 1999 ==================== -----Original Message----- From: Lowell Gilbert [mailto:lowell@world.std.com] Sent: Tuesday, November 23, 1999 8:58 AM To: Boyd D. List the exact results when you run emacs on a text console (i.e., not in X) -- use script(1) if necessary. List the contents of your environment. Describe how you installed emacs (after all, very few people have it in /bin to begin with). > To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-questions" in the body of the message
