I agree it is STABLE - I installed 3.0-RELEASE on a new box. Ran GREAT. 
Cvsuped stable, buildworld, installworld, built kernel, upgraded boot. 
Relatively easy process when I could convince myself to read the manual.
Runs GREAT.
(Knock on wood).
