Juergen,

Thanks for the prediction. ;)  Do you mean set that as an environmental
variable?

I was successfully able to dd the disk, but I still get that same error when
I use the .iso I created instead of the cd drive.

To answer your question, I did in fact rebuild qemu from the port just
before I attempted to create the xp image.
