There were (more or less) FOUR initial efforts: 1) Michael Carlson (the petition started in January). 2) Jeramy Lee / Deven Kampenhout (these guys started something after a long long thread on -stable I believe) 3) Me. I just looked around and couldn't find much, so I got started mailing people and figuring stuff out. 4) The fbsd-nvdriver guys (There are a few guys, but the only one I know by name is Erik Greenwald). Efforts 2, 3 and 4 were started at more or less the same time. I hooked up with Jeramy and Deven after a few days and we decided to work together. We got Michael to give us his petition and continue it another week later. As for who's backed by NVIDIA and who's not, both of us (and we are not really separate efforts, so please do consider us one...or one-and-a-half) are backed by NVIDIA to a certain extent. We have Nick Triantos' blessings (head driver guy at NVIDIA), and so does fbsd-nvdriver. I know Erik actually has been on the phone with Nick to sort out licensing issues, so we're all working hard to get drivers for FreeBSD. NVIDIA has been very helpful, and I'm sure the guys at fbsd-nvdriver agree. I hope that explains things. We're not trying to step on fbsd-nvdriver's feet - we're just trying to make people aware that things are being done and maybe send the suits at NVIDIA a heads up (petition). By creating some awareness of how things are going, we want to avoid the issues that came up when NVIDIA wrote the Linux drivers (flame mails, misinterpretations of licensing, 3rd party code, etc.).
