It is possible your sound card has a audio multiplexer which selects
which external audio source (line in / CD rom connector / microphone)
will
be routed to the audio output.

For example, in VAT (audio conferencing tool) I can select the program
to sample from the CD, Line In or Mic.
There is a default.

I think you can set the input source in XMixer.

It is possible the default setting on your sound card is not CD Input.
