Except that cdrecord wont work with IDE drives under FreeBSD. I have 
almost gotten the atapi cd driver to work with an IDE CD-RW drive,
but it is not completely there yet.
Another way  is to make an ATAPI<>SCSI driver like others (read  Linux)
have. I'm looking at that too, but my time is limitted currently...
