I've seen this error a lot over the years for this port:

/usr/ports/graphics/hdf 148% make

/bin/rm -rf /usr/ports/graphics/hdf/work/HDF4.1r3/hdf/zlib

patch: Try `patch --help' for more information.
*** Error code 2

Stop in /usr/ports/graphics/hdf.

Stop in /usr/ports/graphics/hdf.

Stop in /usr/ports/graphics/hdf.


Also, there is no package for HDF.
