Gotcha... I wasn't aware of that.

However, on my 3.5 system, /usr/local/mysql doesn't exist--the include,
bin and lib are split up into /usr/local/bin, /usr/local/include/mysql,
and /usr/local/lib/mysql.

If I feed PHP's configure (this is from sources, now) with
--with-mysql=/usr/local/, the make dies trying to find the c-client
library (which I have on my system, but not in /usr/local/lib/)

Any ideas?
