Here's the Right Way(TM) to do this:
echo '#! /bin/sh' > ~/.xsession
cat ~/.xinitrc >> ~/.xsession
chmod +x ~/.xsession
# edit /etc/ttys and uncomment the line for xdm
su root -c 'kill -HUP 1'  # or reboot
