I just noticed that someone went into /usr/src/sys/i386/conf and editing their kernel. You might try cp'ing GENERIC to foo and then try the buildkernel over again. You didn't get any response from the buildkernel and I think this may be why. I gave up and reconfigured my computer and did a clean install at this point. You don't have anything to lose :).
