Well just for a start it will break /etc/security (fairly trivially, I'll
grant). How many other scripts in the world will it break? What about cvs?
(Just guessing). Plus as others have pointed out nobody else's diff does
this.

How about adding "DIFF_OPTIONS=-u" to standard profiles instead?
