It's simple why they don't make it open source. Making it open source makes it
easier for ATi to steal their ideas and they can figure out construction of
their GPUs (think of bugs or flaws in the driver or the architecture).

Plus, they have no use of making it open source. I mean, what is the advantage
for them to make it open source? Win more hearts in the Linux and BSD
community? Don't think that they want to sacrifice their secrets about their
hardware for that.

Also, I don't think many people will exactly understand how it works anyway.
At least, one may assume that GPUs are really complicated.
