	I have noticed similar behavior, sometimes xshells take anywhere
between 15 - 60 seconds to become active.  The same thing happens sometimes
when I su from a xterm.

One other thing, after this pause usually 30 seconds, the harddrive lights
up, I assume doing a page-in.
