I think Jordan answered your main question, so I'll answer this one:

I always test GL apps using the various GL-enabled XScreensaver bits 
(/usr/ports/x11/xscreensaver), like "lament", "atlantis", "cage" and whatnot.

BTW, I have utah-glx working great for my TNT.. but I'm never buying another
nVidia again unless they amend their XFree86-hating ways.
