The problem was that FreeBSD didn't work as a gateway between ethernet and a
PPP link.

The reason was that my ISP hadn't configured the rest of my network to their
router. The router knew about the link to my PPP interface but nothing else.
Their router didn't accept any routing information so routed -s -g did't help.
