I don't remember the exact version of X the came with 4.6, but from you email I'd suggest that you try setting up X by using either:

	XF86Setup -> a graphic configuration interface
	xf86config -> text based

>From you email it sounds as if XF86Setup would be easier for you.

Also, on the pentium 166 machine, I think you should try a different window mananger. I think KDE my be to large for that machine. I'd try windowmaker.
