ftp://ftp.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/ports/i386/packages-5-stable/Latest/
contains perl-5.8.7_2, as shown here:

lrwxr-xr-x    1 110      0              23 Feb 04 04:33 perl.tbz -> ../All/perl-5.8.7_2.tbz

`pkg_add -r perl` should do what you want, unless the URL being used
by pkg_add is referring to an outdated location...
