If I comment out the 2 mandatory lines
in the SMP kernel config file, i.e. turn it into uni-processor
mode, and reconfigure, compile and reinstall the OS then the ethernet
card works fine. I need SMP on this machine and I need to be able 
to get this machine's NIC working on the network.
