the porter's handbook, available at:
<http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/porters-handbook/index.html>;
makes for a great general reference. it's slightly out-of-date, but what
isn't covered in it is fully covered in live Makefiles.

/usr/ports/sysutils/webmin/Makefile is an excellent primer example. From
there, check out its depended files, /usr/ports/sysutils/p5-Net-SSLeay.
