I think that adding >that to your list of static routes will also do the trick. Yep, it does. According to man routed, it uses the Internet Router Discovery Protocol to find other routers to talk to. This is done using ICMP broadcast as soon as routed starts up. Neither of my FreeBSD boxes need to run routed apart from routing between the ethernet and PPP link, but there doesn't seem to be a global "use static routes only" switch to routed (at least from my skimming of the man page).
