Wait, until you have installed FBSD, it will BUG you even more ;-) Btw, why is the university forcing you to use Winstuff ? Is it because you have to use Winword ? I dont have it, but I am shure, there is some replacement. Isnt WordPerfect ported to Linux ? Is there any other alternative ? First of all, you can have more than one OS on your machine (with 2 partitions and the boot manager) so using Winthings is not a problem at all..... It behaves like a DOS window. This means that you get only text. This is not a problem as far as using a mouse to cut'n'paste is concerned. Since Netscape is a graphical browser, your idea is a non-starter. You will not be able to display the contents of the browser. I don't know what you want to use NS for. Perhaps lynx (a console based browser) would meet your needs. I is supplied in the ports collection. > Oh, and say it did open without needing X-Windows, how would i open up > multiple windows of netscape. Haven't tried it, so don't quote me. Only advice I have is don't try xemacs on a 486 w/8Mb! It is configured as primary slave (I am using my office computer today but I can get more details later). My installation goes trhough but once I get freeBSD to boot I get this. chnaging root device to wd0s2a changing root device to wd0a error 6:panic can not mount root(2) syncing disk ... done Automatic reboot in 15 seconds press any key on the console to abort. what ever I do it just goes into this loop, it automatically reboots and again fails with the panic and the whole deal gets repeated again. It's hard to know how to do that when you're so new, you just can't figure out where to go for answers. If they send a first installation support question to free-newbies (instead of freebsd-questions) you can be pretty sure they haven't yet worked out where all the support resources are. Most of us would rather save face by looking something up ourselves, if we knew how. When someone like that has a problem, tell them that they can discover the best ways to find quick answers themselves in the Newbies First Aid Kit http://www.welearn.com.au/freebsd/newbies Then they can look at http://www.freebsd.org/projects/newbies.html for links to more self-help information as they go along. While reading these they will discover how to use the FAQ, Handbook, the *.TXT files, freebsd-questions, the mailing list archives, and all the good stuff we take for granted. Lito, please come back and tell us if you have any problems with the above resources. If they're not easy to use, we want to know about it. Another little tip: If you're writing to a FreeBSD mailing list such as freebsd-questions from work, see if you can get rid of any "attachments" to your email. Some people get really annoyed by them when they appear in mailing lists. -- Regards, -*Sue*- To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-newbies" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-newbies Sun Aug 15 20:35: 6 1999 Delivered-To: freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org Received: from mailo.vtcif.telstra.com.au (mailo.vtcif.telstra.com.au [202.12.144.17]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 56141153F5 for ; Sun, 15 Aug 1999 20:34:55 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from LCruz@vcomcss1.telstra.com.au) Received: (from uucp@localhost) by mailo.vtcif.telstra.com.au (8.8.2/8.6.9) id NAA21947; Mon, 16 Aug 1999 13:35:15 +1000 (EST) Received: from maili.vtcif.telstra.com.au(202.12.142.17) via SMTP by mailo.vtcif.telstra.com.au, id smtpd0l5Mdi; Mon Aug 16 13:34:54 1999 Received: (from uucp@localhost) by maili.vtcif.telstra.com.au (8.8.2/8.6.9) id NAA26527; Mon, 16 Aug 1999 13:34:53 +1000 (EST) Received: from mail.cdn.telstra.com.au(144.135.138.138) via SMTP by maili.vtcif.telstra.com.au, id smtpd0Aqq4m; Mon Aug 16 13:34:21 1999 Received: from ntmsg0011.corpmail.telstra.com.au (ntmsg0011.corpmail.telstra.com.au [192.74.168.81]) by mail.cdn.telstra.com.au (8.8.2/8.6.9) with ESMTP id NAA21350; Mon, 16 Aug 1999 13:34:20 +1000 (EST) Message-Id: <199908160334.NAA21350@mail.cdn.telstra.com.au> Received: by NTMSG0011 with Internet Mail Service (5.5.2448.0) id ; Mon, 16 Aug 1999 13:34:11 +1000 From: "Cruz, Lito [IBM GSA]" To: Sue Blake , Eric Hodel Cc: "Cruz, Lito [IBM GSA]" , freebsd-newbies@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: RE: Installing freeBSD3.2 Date: Mon, 16 Aug 1999 13:33:10 +1000 MIME-Version: 1.0 X-Mailer: Internet Mail Service (5.5.2448.0) Content-Type: multipart/mixed; boundary="----_=_NextPart_000_01BEE798.3358B790" Sender: owner-freebsd-newbies@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org This message is in MIME format. Except for some text formmating problems it works. I have a june 1999 WC CD and used sysinstall to install netscape. I am using communicator 4.61 as I write -- works. Make sure you add an eviroment var env MOZILLA_HOME /usr/local/netscape to your .cshrc . You need to look up the syntax for setting .profile if you do not use c shell. The path above is the one on my box using defalt install. Yours may be different. You were correct to send this to freebsd-doc, since whoever is responsible is likely to see it there. Also, the other members of the documentation team will be glad to see that someone not only uses the documentation but appreciates it enough to write and say so! It's hard to work in a vacuum. People who contribute to FreeBSD, whether it's documentation, ports, or whatever, don't always get the feedback they need to know that it's worth doing. Feedback from newbies is particularly valuable, and rare. Being a newbie is a highly specialised skill :-) If you see something that you really like, particularly if it works for you as a newbie, it always helps to write to the person and let them know. You might not feel you can contribute much to the FreeBSD Project yourself at this stage, but you can do a lot to encourage the good efforts of others with a short email to express your appreciation of their work. -- Regards, -*Sue*- To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-newbies" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-newbies Wed Aug 18 19:13: 9 1999 Delivered-To: freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org Received: from f1node01.rhrz.uni-bonn.de (node01.rhrz.uni-bonn.de [131.220.18.131]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4143714F33 for ; Wed, 18 Aug 1999 19:12:59 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from uzs106@ibm.rhrz.uni-bonn.de) Received: from max.alleswirdgelber (ascend-tk-p31.rhrz.uni-bonn.de [131.220.244.31]) by f1node01.rhrz.uni-bonn.de (8.9.3/8.9.3) with ESMTP id EAA224622; Thu, 19 Aug 1999 04:09:39 +0200 Received: from localhost (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by max.alleswirdgelber (8.9.2/8.9.2) with ESMTP id UAA01330; Wed, 18 Aug 1999 20:49:39 +0200 (CEST) (envelope-from uzs106@ibm.rhrz.uni-bonn.de) Date: Wed, 18 Aug 1999 20:49:38 +0200 (CEST) From: Heiko Recktenwald X-Sender: uzs106@localhost.rhrz.uni-bonn.de To: Johan Pettersson Cc: "FreeBSD-Newbies@FreeBSD.ORG" Subject: Re: mount FAT32 In-Reply-To: <37BADB07.DD48F347@student.liu.se> Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII Sender: owner-freebsd-newbies@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org And how do I make it writable by certain users (not only root) ? FreeBSD docs generally are heaps more intelligible to newbies than any of that linux stuff, and a dedicated newbie mailing list is the best idea yet, but from my point of view at least, advice as to what application is user friendly or otherwise needs to be factual and relevant to someone at newbie level. Where does one find info on configuring Lynx ...... there isn't anything at the homepage, or anywhere else I can find for that matter. I posted that question on several local mailing lists in Australia and after I got through all the typical "its easy, just read the HOWTO" responses I have learned to expect from "experts" .... I eventually found that in fact nobody had managed to get lynx working at all, whether in *nix or windows. I'd like to use lynx .in both windows and *nix situations, but without any proper info on how to get it working its no use whatsoever to me. The problems I had .... and others too .... were "startfile not found" (even though its where it should be and uncommented), "temp" file can't be opened" (even though permissions are correct), and similar stuff to that. As it happens, I just put a 350 box together with advice from my friend and Unix Mentor, the AIX Systems Engineer. Got the AMD K6 350 because it was the slowest available. What makes it lightening fast are the: IBM Ultrawide SCSI HD Adaptec 2940UW Controller Asus P5A-B Super Socket Seven Mother w/100 Mhz Bus 64M 100Mhz Dimm Ram (Then, the highest priced ball bearing fan and heat sink I could get) It's all in an Enlight Minitower. I want the following OS installed: 1. Win98 2. NT 3. Linux 4. FreeBSD I have tried the following order: 1, 2, 4, but when partitioning in FreeBSD it only shows 1 (win98), and extended (which is the rest of the disk). So to install 4, i have to delete extended which erases 2 (NT). I did not install FreeBSD bootmanager (this is another story). After installation, during bootup I get "invalid partition table", etc. So I booted up with a win98 floppy, then fdisked, had a look, AND ALL FREEBSD PARTITIONS WERE 'A' set active and type is NON-DOS. OK, set win98 partition to be 'A'. Then tried installing NT and it says boot sector not recognized expected 'A5A5' but got '6A6C' or something like that. Then tried installing FreeBSD WITH FreeBSD bootmanager. During boot up it shows F1 - DOS, F3 - FreeBSD, F4 - FreeBSD, and pressed every bloody key but only accepts F1. What's the use of a bootmanager if it can't boot itself!!!! Then tried this order : 1, 4, 3, during LILO installation, I named the bsd partition option to "bsd", but when installing LILO, there was error. if remove "bsd" from patition label, then ok to continue installation. WEIRD.... OK, install linux. But up with lilo, went into linux, edited /etc/lilo.conf to have the bsd partition boot option, liloed but discovered FreeBSD is AFTER 1024 cylinders. WHAT THE ... IS GOING ON ???? WHAT'S THE ORDER TO GET THESE OS TO CO-EXIST ???? Sorry for the frustration...will battle on... cheers, ------_=_NextPart_000_01BEEAA5.6338DA2A Content-Type: application/ms-tnef Content-Transfer-Encoding: base64 eJ8+IgoAAQaQCAAEAAAAAAABAAEAAQeQBgAIAAAA5AQAAAAAAADoAAEIgAcAGAAAAElQTS5NaWNy b3NvZnQgTWFpbC5Ob3RlADEIAQSAAQALAAAAUGFydGl0aW9ucwAtBAEJgAEAIQAAAEJBMDdDRDY5 OEE1NkQzMTFBMjg3MDAxMDRCMTVDRjAzAAgHASCAAwAOAAAAzwcIABQACgAuAAYABQA1AQEFgAMA DgAAAM8HCAAUAAoALQAJAAUANwEBDYAEAAIAAAACAAIAAQOQBgDoCQAAKwAAAAsAAgABAAAAAwAu AAAAAAACATEAAQAAAMQAAABQQ0RGRUIwOQABAAIAVAAAAAAAAAA4obsQBeUQGqG7CAArKlbCAABt c3BzdC5kbGwAAAAAAE5JVEH5v7gBAKoAN9luAAAARDpcbmV1dHJvblxvdXRsb29rXG91dGxvb2su cHN0ABgAAAAAAAAA6kKnFYyf0hGghgAQSxXPA6KAAAAAAAAAGAAAAAAAAADqQqcVjJ/SEaCGABBL Fc8DwoAAABAAAAC6B81pilbTEaKHABBLFc8DCwAAAFBhcnRpdGlvbnMAQAA5APDx10Cl6r4BHgBw AAEAAAATAAAAWWV0IGFub3RoZXIgbmV3YmllAAACAXEAAQAAABsAAAABvuqcUCs4mejxVo8R065M AAjHJK3SAAGd9KAAAgEJEAEAAAClBAAAoQQAABkHAABMWkZ1Ji3QtQMACgByY3BnMTI10jIA+zM2 AeggAqQD4wkCAGNoCsBzZXQwNiAHEwKAfQqACMggO5sJbw4wNQKACoF1YwBQLQsDYwBBC2BuDhAw MyIzC6YgSSAQ4HZlCCBhIA4gR0IgSHhERC4KogqECoAWMHezAHAFQHRoFoACEGwJALMD8BVAIE8F 8AuAcwGQCxjgCYA6F1QxLiBXKQuAOTgXVDIaoE5UlRdUMxqgTAuAdXgXVIo0GqBGCdFCU0QXXPUW U3QIgWQYfQWwBIEaJigsIDIg4DQg4GJ1nQVAdxiQA6AKsXRpIiB/AiAZIguAHSYZgAVAAiBsMHkg c2gZAAQgMSB2KBkRGvApIOAAcB8QZbx4dAnwAQAfECRwaA3gfmgZgAQgGIIJcBmwIABmJRhzZAQA aykXRVNv7xhwKEAZlSEiaR51KEABAN8Z8CVgJTgl5ASQYREQBCB+MiRgG6AnsBYhJ3AfEG5+bwVA KJYi9gbgLKADgWH+ZwSQJGAYgCZBJkEAcCygrxiQBcAZsAWweSe2QQGA2y5hGZVhIkIg4GQIcRkx uS3SdXAWIS5QBUAiC4B+dgdALGEh9xhwAaAZ8CL7IOARIGMaoCgxFjAt0h8BfzJhA/AYgBaRJIMY sAkAcPxweSDgGIEDoAVwJ4EJgB8g4BDgHxAWoAkAb2ssRTAVTiNQQUxMHSBSBEVFIzJQQVJUSUk6 UE9OBfBXRTmwIPgnQScj4DLBANAiIBZysSURdHlwFoAmQU46kMwtRBlgF0VPSyDgO2J3NlQziShA YhaAOyEaoFR/IbIe1BmVGSIboCTzI3Fz/GF5BCAt0jtRO7AFsSyS6wlwBaBnAwB6HwElQDxw9zuw HwE7IDVEgDtAIWEXVIJnLKEnNkE2QztA/QWxcwNwESAl8BkxM0A3wL8YcTFAF0s/70DzIvZXOmDu SC1PLlEaoEQxyDWiQbJ1JANGJFAtS8AZYCDgRu4zTXEdNU3RNE4aF1QlAv5wJrERECUhFnAv0CFQ OHF+ZCPQN8BRESFxI6MA0GNeZQUwTTIaoUdRJyZUdb8RECbyFqAt2gaQI2JjAHAeJwVAQjMiMBEQ bGYh31ahR58e1iZBIBMgIGghMcIzMZdMSUxPMM0WMOcuMAeAHxRiczNqNtA+5v4iXGE0cSFnQJla cjcTCXD/GCEEIASQA2BLoBdUVTEJcP8EYBZxXeMYsANhIeEztQtg/T9gbDcVOJAoUgWgAjAcYcc8 gTDpGqFFSVIXMGYR3z1YKJZA8RyAGqBCIXE1tvczQAkAIOB3CfAssihhZ3NXNIEncDVyLzShL2ii Lv9kUScRKEAehFw/QjNdRE+W/2iiHwEhYidxBaBQ4R8BIvcxBCBBRlQ64BawMDJZTuBjeUDxBIFz F0VX/EhBQVBKUDsAZhEWIAXwIEdPSU5HGVBOIG4/c5EXWnICJwXwclJPS2XwcIFUWqBHRXIzUwd1 IXThWqBDTy1FWP9y0EFQc54n1mCgI9ACEAXA/RiDclPgHtBlVGYQA/Ao4fpiMUB0GfAjkWYnF1QQ 0K8J4BEAOLV8zwoR0QB+gAAAAAMA/T9SAwAACwAEgAggBgAAAAAAwAAAAAAAAEYAAAAAA4UAAAAA AAADAAaACCAGAAAAAADAAAAAAAAARgAAAAAQhQAAAAAAAAMAAIAIIAYAAAAAAMAAAAAAAABGAAAA AFKFAAC3DQAAHgABgAggBgAAAAAAwAAAAAAAAEYAAAAAVIUAAAEAAAAEAAAAOC4wAAMAA4AIIAYA AAAAAMAAAAAAAABGAAAAAAGFAAAAAAAACwAFgAggBgAAAAAAwAAAAAAAAEYAAAAADoUAAAAAAAAD AAeACCAGAAAAAADAAAAAAAAARgAAAAARhQAAAAAAAAMACYAIIAYAAAAAAMAAAAAAAABGAAAAABiF AAAAAAAAHgAKgAggBgAAAAAAwAAAAAAAAEYAAAAANoUAAAEAAAABAAAAAAAAAB4AC4AIIAYAAAAA AMAAAAAAAABGAAAAADeFAAABAAAAAQAAAAAAAAAeAAyACCAGAAAAAADAAAAAAAAARgAAAAA4hQAA AQAAAAEAAAAAAAAAAwAmAAAAAAADADYAAAAAAB4AMUABAAAADAAAAERMRTY1MjAxOTI3AAMAGkAA AAAAHgAwQAEAAAAMAAAARExFNjUyMDE5MjcAAwAZQAAAAAADAIAQ/////wIB+T8BAAAAYwAAAAAA AADcp0DIwEIQGrS5CAArL+GCAQAAAAYAAAAvTz1URUxTVFJBL09VPVFMRCBLSU5HU0ZPUkQtU01J VEgvQ049TVMgTUFJTCBSRUNJUElFTlRTL0NOPURMRTY1MjAxOTI3AAAeAPg/AQAAAAgAAABMZSwg RGF0AB4AOEABAAAADAAAAERMRTY1MjAxOTI3AAIB+z8BAAAAYwAAAAAAAADcp0DIwEIQGrS5CAAr L+GCAQAAAAYAAAAvTz1URUxTVFJBL09VPVFMRCBLSU5HU0ZPUkQtU01JVEgvQ049TVMgTUFJTCBS RUNJUElFTlRTL0NOPURMRTY1MjAxOTI3AAAeAPo/AQAAAAgAAABMZSwgRGF0AB4AOUABAAAADAAA AERMRTY1MjAxOTI3AEAABzDAAPLHouq+AUAACDAq2jhjpeq+AR4APQABAAAAAQAAAAAAAAAeAB0O AQAAAAsAAABQYXJ0aXRpb25zAAALACkAAAAAAAsAIwAAAAAAAwAGELSZ6FIDAAcQkAQAAAMAEBAA AAAAAwAREAAAAAAeAAgQAQAAAGUAAABJSEFWRUExMkdCSERESVdBTlRUSEVGT0xMT1dJTkdPU0lO U1RBTExFRDoxV0lOOTgyTlQzTElOVVg0RlJFRUJTRElIQVZFVFJJRURUSEVGT0xMT1dJTkdPUkRF UjoxLDIsNCxCAAAAAP1t ------_=_NextPart_000_01BEEAA5.6338DA2A-- To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-newbies" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-newbies Fri Aug 20 14:41:50 1999 Delivered-To: freebsd-newbies@freebsd.org Received: from b.mx.crl.com (bmx.crl.com [165.113.1.81]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id CEC7614E84 for ; Fri, 20 Aug 1999 14:41:45 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from anarchy@crl.com) Received: from crl.crl.com (crl.com [165.113.1.12]) by b.mx.crl.com (8.8.7/) via SMTP id OAA19028; Fri, 20 Aug 1999 14:41:28 -0700 (PDT) env-from (anarchy@crl.com) Date: Fri, 20 Aug 1999 14:41:28 -0700 (PDT) From: Ben Manes To: "Le, Dat" Cc: freebsd-newbies@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: Partitions In-Reply-To: <199908200046.KAA24562@mail.cdn.telstra.com.au> Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII Sender: owner-freebsd-newbies@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org > I have a 12GB HDD. Ok, there's a lot of problems that your going to face, as you already have. I've dealt with some of these, most recently the 1,024 cylinder problem. Here's what you need to do. First Create a layou for your drive, both on paper then using fdisk (UNIX).I know FreeBSD will not boot if it is past the 1,024 limit, and in some distrubutions, the same is with Linux. This is because of neither install a boot block (boot-strap as some call it). I know RedHat 5.05 has this option, but Suse 6.1 and Caledra OpenLinux 2.2 don't. This means you have two choices. First is to create a small (ie. 10mb) partition in the beginning of the drive and have Linux mount that as /boot. Linux will boot off that partition, and then work past the limit. FreeBSD may do something similar, although I haven't checked in on it. If you can't get that to work (ie, Install program wont let you), then just put the Linux partition infront of the limit. For my laptop, I put a 2gb OpenLinux partition at the beginning of the drive, and Windows 98 for the rest. That was because OpenLinux wouldn't let me us the /boot trick. For FreeBSD, you'll have to do the same setup, because it just wont work. I had to put it on a different drive when using my desktop, and gave up on it on my laptop before I moved all the partitions. NT however is not a problem. It uses the mbr, and boots from the Windows 98 partition. If you trick it so it only boots from its NTFS partition, it may have a cylinder limit. It will also be annoying when editing the boot.ini file after it knows of the c: drive. The easiest thing to do is to just let it write over the mbr, and then put NTFS at the end of the drive (past the clinder limit so Linux/FreeBSD can roam ahead). Windows 98 will obviously go ahead of the cylinder limit, as it uses the mbr exclusively. If you begin running out of room above the 1,024 limit, either put windows 98 FAT32 across the threash-hold (meaning above and after), or give it two parttions. It works fine on my laptop taking the rest of the drive (10gb) with OpenLinux infront. The last problem is booting these suckers. If Linux is able to use a boot block, do that! In either case, you can merely config Lilo to 'point' to the other Operating Systems. Having Linux active and setting the default OS, it will easily let you go to windows(98/NT), Linux, or FreeBSD. For the Windows 98/NT partition, setup NT's boot manager to automaticly point to the WindowOS you use the most. If you want Windows 98 as the default OS in general, setup Lilo towards Windows, and NT's towards 98 with a small time-out. Lastly, I don't recomend the trouble, but you can find a How-to for booting NT directly through Lilo. So, here's a potential layout. Remember, the 1,024 cylinder limit is at about 8.4gb on LBA mode (right?). 1: FreeBSD (3gb) 2: Linux (3gb) 3: Windows 98 (4gb) (crosses boundary) 4: Windows NT (2gb) (boots off w98 mbr) That *should* make it all work without bothering with boot blocks, etc. You just need to confiure lilo, either during install or after (edit /etc/lilo.conf and then run /sbin/lilo). If you want to have System Commander or BootMagic manage the Operating Systems, they will merely give you a graphical menu, but not solve any limitations. In either case, Hope that fixes it... I call it user friendly in the sense that by just using the arrows on your keyboard you can either go forward, backwards, select your links and with the enter key you actually browse the selected URL. Now to download, upload and other functions it is not very intuitive? (if you find difficult to press "d" for a download, "u" for upload and "q" for quiting the program). Anyhow, It is not my intention to say "replace your character based internet browser with Lynx" I just want to point out that I have used it (in fact is the first thing I have always installed every time I set up a Freebsd box w/o X and I have not had any problems with it. It is in the port collection, by the way) and it has served its purpose: I can always check my internet e-mail accounts and browse any page that is compliant (not all webs support character based browser). I have never tried the WINDOWS version (I suppose you are refering to MS, because X window is without "s") so I really don't know how it is configured, but if it helps I can email you my configuration file (again I did not have to touch it from install). It is also available at http://www.welearn.com.au/freebsd/newbies/) FreeBSD-Questions@FreeBSD.ORG is the place to send all questions about installing, configuring, running and using FreeBSD. All help requests are handled by FreeBSD-Questions, including newbies questions. FreeBSD-Newbies is different. We don't ask for help or answer how-to questions. It is a discussion forum for newbies. FreeBSD-Newbies provides a place for new FreeBSD users to meet and covers any of the activities of newbies that are not already dealt with elsewhere. Examples include helping each other to learn more on our own, finding and using resources, problem solving techniques, how to seek help elsewhere, how to use mailing lists and which lists to use, general chat, making mistakes, boasting, sharing ideas, stories, moral (but not technical) support, and taking an active part in the FreeBSD community. We take our problems and support questions to freebsd-questions, and use freebsd-newbies to meet others who are doing the same things that we do as newbies. One of the things we do together is learn more effective ways to find help when we need it. Here are some suggestions: When something doesn't work the way you expect 1. First look at the errata for your release of FreeBSD at http://www.FreeBSD.ORG/releases/ for the latest information and security advisories. 2. Search the Handbook, FAQ, and mail archives at http://www.FreeBSD.ORG/search.html 3. If you still have a question or problem, collect the output of `uname -a' and of any relevant program(s) and email your question to FreeBSD-questions@FreeBSD.ORG. Mailing lists When you have a problem that you can't solve by yourself, there's only one support mailing list and that's FreeBSD-questions@FreeBSD.ORG. FreeBSD-questions helps with installation and basic setup as well as more general and advanced questions. You don't have to actually join freebsd-questions before asking a question there. Replies to your question will normally be sent to you personally as well as to the list. Just make sure you have read and followed the guidelines for posting, because you might find them different to what you're used to. If you do subscribe to freebsd-questions you'll have the advantage of seeing all of the recent questions and their answers. Before you post to FreeBSD-questions, please read the guidelines at http://www.lemis.com/questions.html Many of the people who answer FreeBSD-questions are very knowledgeable, but they get frustrated when they get questions which are difficult to understand. http://www.lemis.com/email.html is worth reading too. If you're not sure that you can follow these guidelines, come back and ask the other newbies for help on how to post an effective question to the support mailing list. Maybe your question has been asked before. If you search the mailing list archives at http://www.freebsd.org/search.html first you might get the answer right away. It's always worth trying. Other mailing lists (http://www.freebsd.org/handbook/eresources.html#ERESOURCES-CHARTERS) cover specialised areas and many are more developer-oriented. You'll need to read their charters carefully before participating, but it's probably a good idea to ask on either -newbies or -questions for advice about where to post a more specialised question. FreeBSD-announce is a very low volume read-only list for occasional announcements, such as notice of new releases, and the Really Quick Newsletter. It's worth subscribing to FreeBSD-announce too. Manuals You'll always be expected to show that you have made some effort to use the available documentation before asking for help. That's not always as easy as it sounds! If you know what documentation you need but can't locate it, send a brief query to FreeBSD-questions. If you don't know what you need, always have trouble finding it, or can't make any sense of it when you do, ask some patient newbies to steer you in the right direction. Anyone interested in writing or reviewing documentation for FreeBSD is encouraged to join the FreeBSD Documentation Project. Details are at http://www.freebsd.org/docproj/docproj.html Other resources A resource list is available at http://www.freebsd.org/projects/newbies.html to help new and inexperienced FreeBSD users to find relevant information quickly. It includes books, on line documents and tutorials, and links to web pages that other newbies have found useful for learning. If you have a suggestion for good material to be included, please write to freebsd-newbies and tell us about it. But I have seen people asking questions here! It is quite common for people to send the wrong kind of post to a mailing list. Because we're newbies it'll certainly happen here from time to time. The best thing to do if you see a message that doesn't belong on a list is to ignore it. There's always someone around whose job it is to sort these problems out privately. The posts to the lists go straight through, whatever their content. It is going to be confusing for a little while because we're all newbies so we all make mistakes. That's OK. One thing we're going to see a fair bit is people posting questions, believing they're doing the right thing by posting here as newbies, not realising how it works. If someone answers those questions the situation will snowball. There's nothing wrong with helping someone to redirect their question to freebsd-questions, but please do so gently. There's nothing wrong with the occasional mistake either. So all questions, requests for help, etc still go to freebsd-questions as usual. Ours is more of a discussion group, a place where newbies can relax with other newbies and focus more on our successes than on our temporary imperfection. We can talk about things here that are not allowed on freebsd-questions. We're also a bit freer to make the mistakes that we need to make in order to learn. _________________________________________________________________ To Subscribe to FreeBSD-Newbies: Send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "subscribe freebsd-newbies" in the body of the message. For FreeBSD, I believe you just have to get the root partition under the 1024th cylinder. One trick that works for me is a slight mod on the solution you gave: make two slices for FreeBSD. The first slice goes at the front of the disk and holds the root partition. The second can go whereever, and holds the remaining partitions. The resulting disk layout would look something like: 1st: FreeBSD root partition 2nd: Linux /boot partition 3rd: FreeBSD's remaining partitions 4th: Linux's remaining partition(s) 5th: Win98 (spanning 1024th cylinder) 6th: WinNT > So, here's a potential layout. Remember, the 1,024 cylinder limit is at > about 8.4gb on LBA mode (right?). 8,422,686,720 bytes. According to drive makers, that's 8.4gB. According to the computer, exactly 8032.5MB. The > second can go whereever, and holds the remaining partitions. The annoying part about that is its not as elegent. Linux seperating the kernel from root seems a little better organized, and less prone to dumb administration. Doing this trick for both Linux and FreeBSD might not be needed in his situation, as neither were needed in my example. Its good to know, and to remember that its easy to implement with disklabel (while the Linux varient is not as friendly depending on install program). Also, by using both, it gets wasteful and complex. Each partition takes space, makes the layout harder to work around, adds extra annoyancies when trying to mount another OS's partition (remembering which are the boot partitins), etc. In any case, the next stage is to write a final layout with sizes, who (if any) has the special boot partitions, and making sure the little problems (ie, cylinders) are resolved. Then comes install, then boot management, then bragging to friends, then fun. Then you can simply mcopy things onto an IBM formatted floppy. The other way round, copying things from the floppy, works also with mcopy, but you should put the floppyname and filenames in brackets, if you want to use wildcards, like mcopy "a:bla*". But if you insist, yes, you can mount floppies too, mount -t msdos /dev/fd0 /bla, just like hds........ Hope that helps--and have a nice weekend ! I'm fairly certain it does, but you must have a long file name for it to use long file names (this shouldn't be a problem if you have a "C:\Program Files\.") For my second windows HDD I had to create a d:\thisislong for it to mount with long names. -- Eric Hodel - hodeleri@seattleu.edu - Aspiring programmer & FPS minor demi-god.
