The drive in question must not be the boot disk if you can boot from it.  

You should be OK using the 2.1.5 (or earlier if you can get a hold of
them) boot/fixit floppies.  Note that 2.1 and after, you boot the boot.flp
first then choose the 'fixit' option and stick the fixit floppy in to get
to the prompt.

Someone maintains an archive site of old BSD versions.  They might have
it.  I don't have the address, sorry.
