This is probably because you already have an old version of Xaw3d built and installed, so it could not build the new one that it needed. Get into the habit of using 'make clean' before and after you build and install ports, or better, use portupgrade to build and upgrade your ports, because it solves your next problem of having the old Xaw3d package still installed when you install the new one, leading to stale files on your system and other such problems.
