I verify every backup (not sure if this is possible on FreeBSD--?). I rotate through a dozen tapes or so. If you keep the drive clean and verify the tape content so that you know it is readable, it works very well. The latest DAT drives can put at least 24 GB on one cassette. I don't keep backups for a year; they go back about three months and that is it.
