I have a IBM ThinkPad 755CX sitting next to me that's very nice, and my
NEC Versa P/75 (I finally got back permanently last week) that's also
very nice. Given a preference, I would opt for the 755CX since it's a
bit smaller, lighter, and much more rugged. However, you'll pay big $$
for it, but it's *really* worth it IMHO. I also haven't run XFree86 on
it, although the chipset is supported. Any of the newer ThinkPad are
very nice, but I have only tested the above model.

Also, the Versa P model is no longer being made, and has been replaced
by the NEC 4000 series. Although I haven't tested FreeBSD on it, I
suspect it will work.

All of the above models are a bit spendy, but given your requirements
above I guess you figured that out. Make sure to get the SVGA model
which gives you > 640x480 (currently the state of the art is 800x600).

As far as ethernet goes, I used to recommend the 3Com cards, but
apparently they've changed things in recent 3C589C models so they no
longe work with our if_zp driver, and I haven't had much luck contacting
the PC-CARD folks since they've apparently have a working driver for the
new cards but the fix hasn't made it into our driver yet.

So, I would go with the IBM Credit Card adapter for ethernet if I were
going to buy one today simply because it has known support in FreeBSD
right now.
