I suspect it has to do with the hid_get_item() warnings about chopping stuff off. I can't tell from the source code for hid_get_item() (a 313-line function) why it's behaving that way, or why a totally different HID device (Logitech mouse) causes it to behave differently for this HID device (Synaptics touchpad).
