That's true, these are different scenarios. I think it is caused by some devfs.rules(5) configuration issue, as if you mount the whole devfs into /dev, you will have openpty() to succeed. I have not yet determined which is the device that is needed for openpty(), maybe cognet@ or someone can shed us some light before we digging the code?
