I have CDs of most older versions (starting just before 1.0).  If
anybody *really* wants these, I'll mount the CD and they can download
them (over a 33.6 kb/s modem; 600 MB will take about 40 hours, so
you'll want to pick carefully).

You really need to fix the header file problems.  Using an older
version is really not the way to go.

Yes.  Let's see the error messages (if they're copious, just where
they start).
