There was

configure.ac:166 error: required file './ltmain.sh' not found

Something wrong with the port or configure script?

I looked and found automake and its dependencies (automake-wrapper, autoconf, indexinfo and perl5.20) all up-to-date, so nothing there to upgrade.

Or should I portmaster -f anyway?

Port devel/automake has no configurable options. I looked because of the message above on 'subdir-objects' not being enabled.

Or maybe that's an option in the configure script that I could select if I were building the package directly as opposed to building through the ports system.

But I couldn't find 'subdir-objects' anywhere on running './configure --help' in the work subdirectory (work11.amd64/libva-1.4.0).

I had ffmpeg previously installed, but not multimedia/libva.
