While I ran the powerpc64 installer again with the drive already initialized with a file sy= stem it didn't panic. So I ran newfs from the shell and had it panic the kernel. This is a PowerMac G5 (PowerMac9,1), running the powerpc64 installer from C= D. The panic happens for both Apple Partition Tables and DOS MBR tables.
